Layette Process – Start to Finish:

Requesting a layette

Basically Babies donates layettes through other charities, non-profit organizations, social service agencies and healthcare organizations (See Recipient Organizations).  When a caseworker working with one of these organizations comes into contact with a family that could benefit from the work that we do, they complete a request form for the family and send it in to us.

Once it is received in our office, the request is checked over to ensure it is complete and meets our criteria.  If so, it is approved and the caseworker is contacted to let them know.  Once a request is approved, a layette will be assigned to the family.

This method of distribution of the layettes helps the caseworkers, who are often working with these families on a long-term basis to build life skills and training, to develop, build and enhance the relationships between themselves and the families as they are able to present them with this beautifully packaged gift on behalf of the Edmonton community.

Pulling a layette

Starting upstairs in our warehouse, our volunteers pull all of the color-coordinated clothing items on our Layette Item List, then head downstairs to add in stuffed animals, toys, books, blankets, toiletries & bibs – all following the same color scheme, both so that mixing and matching outfits will be easy, and so the completed basket will look amazing when it is given away.  Then the basket is ready to be sent out for washing.

Washing/Ironing a layette

A volunteer will take the layette home and wash everything in the basket.  Anything that can possibly be ironed is ironed and anything that is found to be stained or damaged is removed and will be replaced before the layette is completed.  The layette is then returned to the office for assembly.

Assembling a layette

Basically Babies layettes are assembled into 7 beautiful layers.  Each layer is carefully laid out so that as the basket is taken apart, the layette continues to be an attractive package layer by layer.

From the bottom up, they include:

Layer 2

The completed layette is then packaged up in clear plastic and tied with ribbons, a gift bow and a small card wishing our best as they raise their newborn.

Completed Layette

Delivering a layette

We usually have the layette ready for the family within one week after approval. (The most common exceptions to this occur when a basket must be custom-made because of sizing or other situations.)  This is important because these families require items to clothe their babies immediately.    Once a layette is completed and ready for a family, the requesting worker is contacted to let them know that the layette can be picked up.  The caseworker then picks up the layette and will present the gift and open it with the recipient family.  The toys and books in the layettes are often used by older children in the home and as the baby grows out of the clothes they are passed on to friends and neighbours.
